OBSERVATION REPORT
Institution name : UPS Tegal.
Teacher :
Sanday Jamaludin, MPd
Subject : Speaking
Student : Semester V
1. The result of the observation
a.
The
background theories of the teaching and learning used
English
becomes the most essential language in the world. Almost allthe
people from
many different countries
around the world
use it to communicate. It’s
because of the importance of English in any scope of our
lives. Based on the reasons above, in recent years, English language teaching
has focused on teach
the English language
rather than teach
about the English language. The
emphasis is not only on
linguistic competence of the language learners but also on the development
of their communicative ability. In order to develop the
learners' communicative ability,
the teacher needs
to create a scenario to teach the target language in a
vibrant, active and interesting manner.
In learning speaking
skill.
The students
often find some
problems. The problem frequently
found is that
their native language
causes them difficult
to use the foreign language. Other reason is because of motivation lack
to practice the second language
in daily conversation.
They are also
too shy and
afraid to take part
in the conversation.
Many factors can
cause the problem
of the students. speaking skills
namely the students interest, the
material, and the media
among others including
the technique in
teaching English.
Many techniques can be
applied because many research findings
say that this technique is effective to use in teaching speaking.
In this
observation I assume that the lecturer use multi-methods
( cooperative learning ,
communicative approach, and integrated learning) in teaching learning process
because in teaching class activity the lecturer use more than one
techniques in teaching . Stephen D. Hattings
said that based on his observation in the conversation class, the role
play would seem to be the ideal activity in which students could use their
English creatively and it aims
to stimulate a
conversation situation in
which students might
find
1
themselves and
give them an
opportunity to practice
and develop their communication skill.
I observe
that in teaching speaking the student look relax and
enjoying practice speaking , using role play
seem the student become active for expressing their speaking and
stimulate a conversation situation. In the same time show cooperative teaching and communicative approach to
give them an
opportunity to practice
and develop their communication skill.
2. The reason he used this theory
The reason lecturer use multi-approach are :
a.
That
communicative approach is based on the idea that learning
language
successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. When learners are
involved in real communication, their natural strategies for language
acquisition will be used, and this will allow them to learn to use the
language.
I observed In the classroom, Classroom activities guided
by the communicative approach were characterized by trying to produce meaningful and real
communication, at all levels. As a resulted there
might be more emphasis on
skills than systems, lessons were more learner-centred, and there might be used
of authentic materials.
b.
That
cooperatives learning (CL) is defined as an approach which
Encourages and promotes the maximum
use of cooperative activities based on pair work and group work of learners in
the classroom. (Fathman and
Kessler 1993; Richards
and Rodgers 2001) claim that CL
is group work structured in such a way as to enable student interac-tion, the
exchange of information,
as well as
cooperation rather than
competition in learning.
My observation show that the lecturer
looked friendly. if some students was really confused and didn’t understand the
learning material,l, nevertheless, hesitated to raise their hands and asked for
further clarification and explanation, as they were in habited by the fear. On
the other hand, CL classrooms created a positive setting in which feedback and
correction represented part
of the process
of communication, which
lead to an
easy acquisition/learning of
vocabulary and grammatical forms.
2
c.
That
integrated strategy based on the premise that learning is a series of
connections. This approach allows students to
learn in a way that is most natural to them. Teachers can create
interesting material in teaching
and made up of themes of interest to the
student, use of natural learning, and building on student’s interests, teaching
skills in meaningful contexts, more flexibility .All material must be
integrated with curriculum
I
observe that the lecturer used teaching
learning a holistic way and reflected
the real world, Thus the topics
could be presented in a more meaningful
way
3. The success achievement both a and b in
the process of learning and the goal
By using
multi-approaches in teaching speaking , The teaching will be
more
succeed because:
1.
Multi-methods
in teaching speaking provide many techniques in teaching and learning process.
We know that the student have difference
characters in learning process. Some of them study through audio or visual, another
student learn by motorist and the rest
learn combination from audio-visual and
motorist.
2.
Multi-methods
help the teacher to reach the goal of speaking that student have speaking skills after following speaking
teaching.
4. Give comment and Suggestion
a.
Comment
Base on my observation.
The process teaching and learning is “ Good
“
b.
Suggestion
( use another theory if possible)
1.
Teaching
will be better if the lecturer come on time
2.
Discipline
attendant have to hold because it is very important for teaching and learning
process in progress
3.
Provide
maximum opportunity to students to speak as the target language by providing a
rich environment that contains collaborative work, authentic materials and
tasks, and shared knowledge.
4.
Involve
speaking activities not only in class but also out of class or other people who
can help.
5.
Do
not correct students' pronunciation mistakes very often while they are
speaking. Correction should not distract student from his or her speech.
6.
Add
another theories language learning if possible.
